Once upon a time in 1920's Georgia, a singer named Mamie fell in love with a farmer named Silas. She was black and dreaming of a career on stage. He was white and married with a whole mess of kids counting on him. They loved anyway. It was against the law to marry, and frowned upon to even be seen together, so they hid their affair. Just when they thought their world couldn't get any more complicated, along came a baby. That baby was my grandmother.Race Records was the term used for phonograph records made by and marketed to African Americans in the 1920's and 30's. The thought was to segregate music, just like we segregated people. But music flows as it will, and people love as they do. Mamie and Silas met during this time of segregation and so many things divided them--color, family obligations, distance--but one thing held them together, love.Race Records is the story of that love, how it has affected my family, and how each of us have tried to come to terms with our own race records.

I love Race Records! Can not wait for Wendy to publish the sequel. I live in North Carolina, therefore the book was extra exciting because the setting is in the East coast. There were neat facts throughout the book about historical events and I completely enjoyed the references to several historical characters as well. After reading Race Records we got to meet Wendy and that was an absolute delight! I got to share my observations, among them the subtle theme of men coming in and out of the lives of the women (the only exception being Silas). Anyway, don't want to give too much away. Hope you all enjoy it too and I'm excited for part 2 :)Product details

Race Records Wendy Hayton Books Reviews
I literally kept reading and had it done in a weekend, started Friday night and ended Sunday morning at 900 a.m. This is a book that draws you in, allows you to see a family and their struggles, through racism, within the family, and their own personal struggles. The love and appreciation of family is so very strong and can be felt within the first chapters. This is a great start to a wonderful author's career. Wendy takes us into a generational dilemma and keeps us attached to the heartache of each maternal figure within the family. Keep 'em coming Wendy cannot wait for your next book!!
This book is one that will keep you hooked til the end. Wendy Hayton is an amazing author!
This book keeps your mind thinking as it changes from one character to another which keeps you so involved that you don't want to put it down. I loved that Mamie intertwines with many of the eras great musicians and writers. It's nice to see this level of writing from a first time author and I look forward to reading more of Wendy's books to come.
This book is a sweet love story. A young girl learns history through her history. Those who come before us have much to teach, but too often we're too young to hear or understand. I look forward to reading more of May's adventures, or wondering what happens next.
I was mesmerized by this book and the characters. At times I had problems trying to remember who was who. I loved naming names and the tidbits of history that went with those names. I felt like I was there.
Race Records, through letters and memories, brings to life a family history entwined with music and magic, evoking the spirits of four generations of strong women. It invites you to enter into their story, feel their joy, their sadness, their pride, and most of all, their love. This is a read not to be missed.
This is a novel, but is based on the author’s actual family history. It is a fascinating and heartrending story, very well written. I have to admit that my expectations were not high for an ebook by a first time novelist and I was quite pleased to have those low expectations shattered. Ms. Hayton mined her own family history for this look at a little known aspect of American history, but I hope she has other stories to tell as she has a unique voice.
